Jermaine Pennant’s January Adventure

Last week’s major news story was that Jermain Pennant’s outrageous wage demands got in the way of a move to Real Madrid. Pennant went on to say that he dreams of a move to Madrid, and this has alerted clubs around the world that he is available for transfer.
Atletico Madrid jumped right into the Pennant race, and Real are rumored to be interested in reviving a deal. Closer to home, though, many Premier League clubs are also lining up a move for the Liverpool winger.
Leading the race at the moment …

Stevie G Full of Irony

If you haven’t heard the news yet, Liverpool’s inspirational leader and talisman Steven Gerrard has today been arrested over an alleged bar brawl. Gerrard was arrested in the wee hours of Monday morning with five other men as they were leaving a bar in Stockport. The victim, Merseyside police said, was taken to the hospital due to non-life threatening facial injuries.

Does Liverpool Have What it Takes?

Before the season started, I wrote an article about Liverpool’s slim chance of winning the Premier League. Now the English media - as well as the Liverpool fan base - is going mad about how great Rafa Benitez’s side is and how they’re in an excellent position to win the league. To that, I still say “bollocks!”
Before you get all anxious, let’s explore why I say this, even though Liverpool sit at the top of the table.
Early Season Points

Yesterday afternoon, Liverpool finally ended Chelsea’s fantastic home record of 86 games without a loss with a superb 1-0 win. It was a deserved triumph for Rafael Benitez’s side achieved without Fernando Torres and the first setback for the reign of Luiz Felipe Scolari at Chelsea. Although the score should’ve been  higher, Liverpool fans will have went home delighted at the way their team has performed so far this season. And so far, the Anfield club are looking like a serious title challenger.

First they beat current champions Manchester United, and add …

As Liverpool travel to London to square off against top of the table Chelsea, manager Rafa Benitez is sweating over the fitness of three of his key players. Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard, and Xabi Alonso all picked up injuries against Atletico Madrid midweek, and the trio will be assessed before Sunday’s match against Chelsea.
The loss of Robbie Keane would be a particularly big blow to the side as star striker Fernando Torres has already been ruled out by injury. Dirk Kuyt has been the replacement striker in the squad as …

In the buildup to Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Liverpool, Frank Lampard has begun the mindgames. At a press conference this morning, the English midfielder declared that - under Rafa Benitez - Liverpool are Chelsea’s closest title rivals.

This statement is one that we’ve seen time and time again from both players and managers leading up to a match. Lampard is surely hoping that Liverpool let this statement go to this head. It is, after all, a story that we’ve seen affect Liverpool every season since the inception of the Premier …

With eight weeks gone in the 2008/09 Premier League season, it appears that the table is starting to show its true shape. The Big Four - Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool - are all hitting their strides as they start stringing together consecutive wins.
At United the trio of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Dimitar Berbatov are firing on all cylinders as United’s goal tally accumulates. At Chelsea, injuries are being covered up by the good form of players like Salomon Kalou who has done brilliantly coming off the bench …

Everton
Over the summer David Moyes made it clear that he wasn’t happy with the funds that Everton was giving him. The end result has seen Everton make one key signing in the form of Louis Saha, who is yet to appear for the Merseyside club. On opening day the Toffees suffered a last minute defeat against Paul Ince’s Blackburn side, but a victory against West Brom …

With this weekend being an international week, this edition of the Premiership Talk Friday Five takes one last glance at the world of transfers.
